About 70% of South Korean land is made of mountains, and hiking is an avid hobby of many Koreans. Many avid hikers have the goal of conquering the “top” 100 peaks in South Korea.

On January 31, I embarked on a 2 day, 1 night trip to Jirisan. I had been to Jirisan just once before - to Baemsagol, which is a famous valley in Jirisan, but had only been there for a few hours. I was off for winter vacation for about a month, and had dedicated a lot of January to exploring various peaks in Korea and gaining confidence in hiking. So, I felt ready and excited for my trip to Jirisan.

I visited Naesosa, which is located in Byeonsanbando National Park. This is in southwest Korea, near the ocean. To get there, I took a bus from Jeonju to Buan Bus Terminal. Then, I took a taxi from Buan Bus Terminal to Naesosa Temple. The tax fare was about 25,000 won. Here is the entrance of the park, where I stopped at the visitor center and got a map and a few postcards.

I moved to South Korea in August 2017 and found a new hobby - hiking and trekking in Korea. Although I had done a little hiking back home in the U.S., I had never been that serious about it.
